FASHION MEETS CULTURE: A CELEBRATION OF MALAY TRADITIONAL ART & CRAFTS THROUGH 'HABAYA' by ZERY ZAMRY

In a much anticipated follow up to his exquisite 2007 debut fashion show, Zery Zamry, the Shah Alam-based designer is launching his collection named “Habaya”.

Zery’s inspirations originated from an Arabic word ‘Habaya’. The word ‘kebaya’ which is the malay traditional dress was originated from the word ‘habaya’. ‘Habaya’ is a long dress draped from the shoulders with a center front slit worn by some women in many Arabian Peninsula. Zery’s signature ethnic-inspired design is an amalgamation of the rich and diverse culture of Malay traditional art & crafts with ‘Habaya’, both with a very strong individual flavour and yet blending in to create a contemporary style for women.

Launching at M-IFW 2008, the collection taps into Zery’s silk signature of Thai, Satin and Chiffon with Swarovski diamonds embelishment, making the collection instantly recognisable. The collection centered towards his intricate craftmanship in Nyonya kebaya embroidery as it is strategically placed throughout his garment. The late Datin Seri Endon's passion for local arts has inspired Zery to share his impressions of the Nyonya kebaya embroidery in this striking collection as a tribute to this charming fashion icon. Zery also brings dedication and persistence to the world of fashion that is accentuated by his colourful garment favoring royal blue, lime green, nude color, dark brown, magenta, black and dark purple.

"My design is to make a woman feel feminine, to feel a silky touch caressing her skin, and show off her right curves," says Zery. “At the same time, I want to make a woman feel relaxed and glamorous”

The collection will highlight Zery’s versatility as it transits from evening to cocktail dress followed by casual and swimming suit. A creative fashion treat is indeed in store for those who come to the show as it is not your typical fashion show and for these collections, Zery Zamry will use Dynaz Mokhtar, well-known actress and model as his muse.
